On June 16, the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies released its 2017 State of the Nation’s Housing report at the National League of Cities in Washington, D.C. This annual report describes key trends in national and metro-level home ownership and rental markets, and reviews significant economic and demographic trends that are shaping demand in those markets.

The 2017 report discloses that “after the onset of the Great Recession, the national housing market is finally returning to normal. With incomes rising and household growth strengthening, the housing sector is poised to become an important engine of economic growth.”

Despite the upwards growth of the national housing market, some markets are not thriving, including the affordable housing market. The State of the Nation’s Housing Report notes that “addressing the scale and complexity of need requires a renewed national commitment to expand the range of housing options available for an increasingly diverse society.”
